Our Story

Our story begins with family. Great American Popcorn Company began in 1994 when our parents, David & Catherine Lewis, made Galena, Illinois, their full-time home. They left behind corporate jobs in Chicago for a different way of life, one in which family and top-notch customer service would be at the forefront of their business model. Being raised in the store, we watched our folks treat every customer who walked in the door like family. With kids of our own running around now and a lifelong love for popcorn, we will always uphold the same level of customer service that our folks founded our family business on.

Our simply delicious popcorn is made with the highest quality ingredients and the best non-GMO popcorn sourced entirely from American family farms. All our gourmet popcorn is handcrafted in small batches, daily. August 1994 Our very first location was opened at The Galena Square next to Dick's Supermarket, now Piggly Wiggly, with a satellite location located in the Desoto House Hotel. When a location on Main Street opened up we decided to consolidate to one store & make the move.

June 1995 311 S. Main street was our new home. With a larger main street location we were not only able to expand our variety of popcorn flavors, but we had the hussle and bussle of the downtown tourism. We were fortunate enough to be able to expand our offerings to our customers and started making homemade chocolates, caramel apples & sell a variety of candies and ice cream.

April 2000 Time for another move to a much larger location, closer to the center of the downtown strip. 205 S. Main Street was a wonderful move for us that allowed us to expand our selections & creativity even more!

April 2009 After 9 years we decided to move to 110 S. Main Street. At this point, we were in the heart of Main Street, enticing all those walking downtown with the lure of our sweet caramel corn smells wafting through the air, daring passersby to resist the temptation!

September 2017 Due to an ever growing online presence we were able to open our brand new off-site production center to specifically cater to our online customers, fundraising events & wholesale clients. Our downtown Galena location still makes all of our popcorns, handmade fudge & chocolates in house, all day, everyday. To say we’re blessed would be an understatement!

January 2021 We've moved!!! Same amazing town, just a block down! As a family, we have been on Main Street in Galena for over 30 years! Our growth continues & we can't wait to show you our new home! Stay tuned for a full video tour...
